The summer is here and all you want to do is take a dip in the pool to feel rejuvenated. Just as you are about to dip your feet into the water, you notice something swimming in it. Suddenly, you don’t want to swim anymore.
To avoid such a situation, you need to ensure you constantly maintain and look after your pool. You need to especially do this in the summer due to the combination of heat and water.

Where do I start?

First, skim the pool’s surface to collect debris. Throw the waste far away from the pool so it doesn’t find its way back. Then direct the return jet’s poolside nozzle down so you quieten the surface ripples. It will ensure a clear view of the pool’s bottom. Once you can see the bottom, turn on your robotic pool cleaner (we carry a few!) or take out your vacuum and use it for 30 minutes. Make sure to move the vacuum around your pool in parallel lines that overlap.
Once this is completed, you need to check the chemical concentration in the pool. It is essential to correct the levels if they are too high or too low for a healthy pool. To do this, you need to adjust the pH with muriatic acid if it is above 7.6 or soda ash if it is under 7.4. Restoring chemical levels will keep the water clean and healthy while killing bacteria.

After this, you must backwash the filter inside your pump, irrespective of its type- sand, cartridge, or diatomaceous earth (DE). If your pump is old, call Deckside Pool as you may need to consider a new pump. Then clean the skimmer by removing the basket.
Next you will add chlorine to you system. If the chlorine is lesser than 1 part per million (ppm), throw in chlorine or add pool pucks to your skimmer, or increase the alkalinity with baking soda. For spas, a chlorinator or floating container can be handy to gradually add chlorine into a hot tub. Add more chlorine to the pool when the weather is hot or the pool is used frequently (use test kits to determine if you are in range).
Finally, check the water level of the pool. Use a hose to add water if it is less than halfway up the skimmer basket.
